What Are Interconnected Smoke Alarms??

What Are Interconnected Smoke Alarms?

a view of a house

Fire alarms and smoke detectors are common investments in home safety. Basic models work by providing protection for a single area. Interconnected versions expand their coverage. They can add even more safety to your home.

Like all warning systems, interconnected smoke alarms might reduce your home insurance premiums. If you have not done so, now is an excellent time to consider an upgrade.

How Do They Work?

In a typical situation, a single fire alarm or smoke detector works to alert those in that space of a problem. Let’s say a fire occurs in the upstairs bedroom. The smoke detector in the room reacts. It sounds. People hear it and leave the home.

In an interconnected system, the device links with other smoke detectors in the home. This smart link – often over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, allows all devices to react when one senses a problem. In this example, all of the smoke alarms in the home would sound. That means the family member in the basement receives the alert as well. He or she may not hear a single device sounding. But, now that they all are, everyone can react. This improves the safety of the home. It might give homeowners a better chance to escape the home, or even isolate small problems before they become serious.

Investing in Smart Technology

Interconnected smoke alarms can help improve the safety of your home. Some of these devices link to your smartphone, too. This allows the device to send you a message if there is an alert. You can react even if you are not home. You may wish to call the fire department. You may wish to call and check on your loved ones. This type of connectivity is empowering for homeowners. It allows for improved reaction time. It may help reduce the damage to your home as well.

You can find a wide range of interconnected devices like this. Some include fire, smoke, and carbon monoxide. They are usually as easy to install as traditional versions. You can learn how to use them rather easily. Once in place, you gain the benefit of this shared knowledge.

As a homeowner, you need to protect your property. If you decide to upgrade and invest here, be sure to tell your home insurance agent. Sometimes, these types of technologies improve safety. They can lead to reduced home insurance premiums. That means they can save you money. And, of course, they are working to protect your family, too.
